You're right that this is the kind of thing most reviewers never discover,
just as they always accept that any "restoration" is good without bothering
to compare. But the writer of the "Shadow" screenplay said in several
interviews that Schreck only made one film which means this writer worked
on the script a full decade without doing some elementary research on a
main character. So what should we expect? However some reviewers, such as
the Village Voice's J. Hoberman (who actually liked the film), did point
