Gender in Asian Cinema
Guest Editors: Dr. Tan See Kam and Dr. Gina Marchetti

The Asian Journal of Communication (AJC) is planning a special issue devoted
to Gender in Asian Cinema. This special issue aims to highlight the ways in
which gender issues have impacted all aspects of the cinema in Asia. Papers
are invited that deal with any of a constellation of issues that surround
this topic, including, but not limited to:

· Representations of gender and sexuality
· Studies of the intersection of issues of gender with race, ethnicity,
class, nationality and other aspects of identity
· Colonialism, post-colonialism, and gender in Asian cinema
· Gender, Asian cultures, and cinema practices
· Comparative studies of gender in Asian cinema
· Gender and popular film genres in Asia
· Gender differences in Asian cinema industries (e.g., government
regulation, censorship, production, distribution, exhibition, and marketing)
· Histories of gender in Asian film
· Gender, style, and star images
· Gender, spectatorship, consumerism, and Asian audiences
· The relationship between gender and new technologies
· Gender and issues of diaspora, exile, and other forms of displacement

Papers should address an audience of communication generalists, but may come
from any discipline (e.g., women’s studies, cinema studies, cultural
studies, ethnic/regional studies, sociology, mass communications, etc.) or
be interdisciplinary in orientation. Papers on understudied aspects of
Asian cinema and film industries that have not received much scholarly
attention are particularly encouraged.
