CFP: THE HISTORY OF FILM EXHIBITION
AND THE IMPORTANCE OF MOVIE THEATRE
PRESERVATION AND RESTORATION.


The SW/TX Popular Culture & American Culture
regional associations will meet at the Sheraton
Oldtown Hotel with an entirely renovated hotel
and more meeting rooms in Albuquerque, March
7-10, 2001.  For additional information on the
SW/TX PCA and ACA visit the website at

Papers wanted on the historical, social, cultural,
and financial impact of film exhibition in
communities outside major metropolitan areas,
as well as papers on local theatre restoration or
preservation projects.

Topics might include:

The role of small town "picture palaces" in
     homogenizing American culture
Community perceptions on the influence of
     movies on children
Local film censorship efforts
Film exhibitors as War Bond vendors or civic
     "boosters"
The small town theatre as a "news" source
The conflict between independent exhibitors
     and regional film exhibition companies
The economic impact of movie theatres on
     Main Street
The "talkies" come to town
Restoration and preservation efforts
Theatre design
Drive-ins and changing lifestyles
The rise of the multiplex


Papers treating any aspect of the topic
are welcome.
