Kino Video is releasing a 5 title 3 tape series entitles FIRST LADIES-
EARLY WOMEN FILMMAKERS
1915-1925. This is my own special project at Kino and these films will NOT
be available from any of the usual wholesalers, websites or stores. They are
as follows

Tape 1 HYPOCRITES
1915 Color Tinted 50 Minutes
Directed by Lois Weber
This is the film that put Weber on the map as a commercial director. A
parallel
story about a medieval monk and a modern minister both fighting the
hypocrisy and moral decay in society. Infamous for featuring a completely
nude women who darts throughout the film exposing "the naked truth". ( they
had to paint clothes on her in Boston)

on the same tape

ELEANOR'S CATCH
1916 B/W 15 Minutes
Directed by Cleo Madison
A nifty two reeler from the much neglected actress/director Madison who
stars as the title character, a young woman about to be dragged into a life
of crime. Kind of like a Warner Bros. 30s melodrama with a nifty surprise
ending

TAPE #2

THE OCEAN WAIF
1916 Color Tinted. 40 Minutes
Directed by Alice Guy-Blache
One of only 3 surviving by pioneer director Guy-Blache. THE OCEAN WAIF is
old fashioned romance between an abused young girl and a famous writer but
intricately edited into a complex adventure. Has some missing footage and
nitrate decomposition but also beautiful color tints from Guy-Blache's
original instructions.

On the same Tape

49-17
1917 Color Tinted 62 minutes
Written & Directed by Ruth Ann Baldwin
Though virtually unknown today, Baldwin was a leading scenario writer of
of films in the teens and worked her way up to directing in 1915. This is
her only surviving film and it is terrific
western satire adventure about an east coast millionaire who decided to
relive his youth
as a miner in the '49 gold rush by hiring a troop of actors to recreate an
old western town
Makes fun of virtually every western stereotype but lots of action sequences
too.

Tape #3

THE RED KIMONA
1925 Hand Colored sequences 80 minutes
Directed by Walter Lang and Mrs. Wallace Reid
The Red Kimona is based on an infamous true story of young girl tricked
into a life of prostitution in New Orleans who goes on trial for murdering
her pimp. Dorothy Davenport Reid became a director and producer after the
death of her husband, matinee idol Wallace Reid in 1923 from an accidental
drug overdose. She focused on social issues like drug abuse, prostitution
and teenage sex. The Red Kimana which is based on a story by Dorothy Arzner
and a screenplay by Anita Loos is a highly sympathetic portrait of a
prostitute who tries to reform.

All of these films are mastered from 35mm prints at the Library of Congress
and have newly added piano scores.

They are $49.95 each or $120 for all three

I have been working on this series for A LONG TIME and I hope if there is
enough interest I can get Kino to put out more films directed by women in
the silent era
