BUÑUEL: A CENTENARY CONFERENCE
Organised by:
QUEEN MARY AND WESTFIELD COLLEGE (University of
London, UK) and ROEHAMPTON INSTITUTE LONDON (UK)
With the support of:
INSTITUTO CERVANTES, LONDON
INSTITUTE OF ROMANCE STUDIES, LONDON
NATIONAL FILM THEATRE, LONDON
14TH-16TH SEPTEMBER 2000
CALL FOR PAPERS
Luis Buñuel, who died in 1983, was born with the century. This
conference celebrates the achievements of one of the world's great
film directors in the year of his centenary. To commemorate his
work this event will bring together internationally renowned Buñuel
scholars as well as collaborators on the films he directed or
produced. The aims of the conference are to revisit the films in the
light of recent critical and theoretical approaches, to explore the
relations between Buñuel and his collaborators, and to reassess his
place in the history of cinema. Plenary sessions will both draw on
the experiences of those who worked with him on the films
- stars/scriptwriters/other creative personnel - and focus on familiar
and new directions for Buñuel scholarship. Additional sessions will
cover a wide range of issues related to the whole range of Buñuel's
work in Spain, France and Mexico. Among Buñuel's collaborators
we hope to include sessions involving Jean-Claude Carrière, Angela
Molina and Francisco Rabal, among others. Buñuel scholars
invited to give papers include Michael Wood, Agustín Sánchez
Vidal, Vicente Sánchez Biosca, Santos Zunzunegui, Marsha
Kinder, Susan Martín Márquez, Jo Labanyi, Victor Fuentes, Joan
Mellen, and others. Specific areas for discussion will include
questions related to: surrealism and psychoanalysis, gender, the
family, the Gothic, comedy, literary sources and links, stars,
Buñuel's years in pre-Civil War Spain, the Mexican period, exile,
Buñuel's legacy. Support has already been offered by the
Instituto Cervantes, the Institute of Romance Studies, and the
National Film Theatre in London, and is being sought from the
Spanish, French and Mexican Governments, the Diputación
General de Aragón, the Institución Fernando el Católico, L'Institut
Francais, and the British Academy. This will be a major
contribution towards the re-evaluation of one of the most inventive
and most provocative figures in the history of world cinema. The
conference will be conducted in English, Spanish, and French.
