Ben:

A film with a key crowd scene? Fritz Lang's FURY.

The crowd "burning" of Spencer Tracy's character is represented twice:
once "as it happens" and then on film in the trial. 'Course, the whole
film is about mob mentality.

And speaking of lynching scenes: There's also an important attempted
mob lynching in YOUNG MR. LINCOLN. Lincoln (Henry Fonda) defeats the
attempt with humor and the Bible and the "castrating stare" that the
CAHIERS piece makes so much of ("Lincoln does not posses the phallus,
he is the phallus.").
