My colleague asked me to forward the following to you. Remember, please
respond to her address directly, not to the list, and certainly not to me!
Of course, we are not given to "flame wars", are we?

Subject: Netters' behavior & flame wars (*not list specific*)

friends,

In the months since being introduced to electronic mail, I have subscribed
to a number of lists, from unmoderated discussion list to moderated
scholar-oriented lists. In that time, I've noticed that no matter how
lofty the purpose for the lists, almost all have engaged in flame wars of
various degrees of severity.

This has raised a question which I hope you won't mind me posing to all of
you. What impact does e-mail have on your psyche as a user? Do you find
that your behavior changes, for better or worse, because of the relative
anonymity e-mail provides?

Studies have been done on changes in personalities when behind the wheel of
an automobile, but has anyone done one related to e-mail?

If you have any responses, please send them to me at the address below and
not to the list. If you would like a summary of the responses, I would be
glad to send it to you.

I ask for pardon for slipping away from your list's usual topics; however,
if you feel you must flame me anyway, please send it to me and not to the
list.
