Shalom!
I just saw the documentary WONDERFUL AND HORRIBLE LIFE OF LENI
REIFENSTAHL at the Jerusalem Film Festival. I have read all the
postings on this film as well as on the lady herself.
 
I wish to describe the screening that I attended. The hall was sold out
(about 250 seats). There was a preface delivered by one of the
producers of the documentary.  In a sort of apologetic manner, he
explained that he was a non-Jew German and that the reason or at least
one of the reasons the film was made was to still film the living Leni
and have on record her views,attitudes and expertise on filmmaking.
He then went on to note the significance of having it on view in
Israel.  He urged the audience to view the film with some objectivity (my
word for his English was halting). He indicated that Leni was a terrific
actress even while she was lying. And to top it all off, he would remain
after the screening for any comments and or criticisms.
 
I saw the film and thought not only was it fascinating and very well made
asking all the questions that anyone could possibly think of especially
concerning her politics,but that it provide an historical insight of
one artistic German who stayed during the Nazi era. I additionally came
away impressed with her abilities and professionalism even unto this
day.  What a woman!
 
I do believe that those in Israel who either saw the film or know of her
works cannot appreciate her talents tainted as they are with her Nazi
sympathies  but it is the old argument of the the separation of
art from politics, or immorality or philandering etc.
