Subject:  Fulbright Scholar Program Update of Awards Still Available
for 1995-96 (Communication and Journalism)
 
Award Availability:
 
CIES is accepting late applications for the 1995-96 lecturing and
research award openings listed here.  The availability of individual
awards will change as applications are submitted, and opportunities
within countries and regions may close at any time.  Please confirm
the status of the awards that interest you before proceeding or
completing the application materials.
 
Assignment:
 
Awards range from three to twelve months.  Most teaching assignments
are for a semester or academic year.  Lecturing is in English unless
otherwise noted.
 
Award Benefits:
 
Award benefits vary by country and type of award.  Grants range in
duration from two months to the full academic year.  Benefits may
include: monthly stipend; round-trip travel for the grantee (In many
countries, travel for up to two dependents for semester and/or
academic year awards); housing or housing allowance in many countries;
subsistence or living allowance in many countries; and tuition
allowance in certain countries.  Sabbatical, leave-of-absence, or
retirement pay may be used concurrently with Fulbright support.
 
Eligibility:
 
1) U.S. citizenship is required at the time of application.  Status as
a permanent resident is not sufficient.
 
2) A doctorate is required at the time of application, unless
otherwise noted.  In fields such as TEFL, the performing or creative
arts, etc., the appropriate terminal degree may be acceptable.  For
professionals outside academe, comparable experience and recognized
professional standing are expected.  Consult individual award
descriptions.
 
3) Proficiency in a foreign language is required for some awards, as
noted in the award descriptions.

Journalism ...

Communications and Journalism: Hong Kong. Teach UG/G courses and
conduct research. Of particular interest are graphics, animation,
special effects, and related areas, as well as print or broadcast
journalism. Hong Kong Baptist College.
 
Communications and Journalism: Peru. Teach UG course at the University
of Lima, a workshop at the University of Piura, and a seminar for
working journalists on newspaper and/or magazine journalism,
television and/or film production, or media management and marketing.
Good knowledge of Spanish required.
 
Communications/Journalism: Indonesia. Teach G courses in field of
specialization. Particular interest in the development and teaching of
research methodology.
 
Journalism: Pakistan. One award for a journalist, educator, or editor
to teach basic reporting and editing skills and provide practical
insights about the journalism profession in the United States to
working journalists and students.  University of the Punjab, Lahore.
 
Journalism: Romania. Teach courses in mass media theory, mass media
and society, mass media law, public relations, and radio, TV, or print
journalism. University of Bucharest and University of Timisoara.
 
Journalism: Slovenia. Teach courses in journalism, including
introduction to print, radio, and television journalism. University of
Ljubljana.
 
Mass Communications: Singapore. Teach UG courses in mass
communications.  Of particular interest are journalism, broadcast
media, promotional communications, and communications research.
Nanyang Technological University, Singapore.
 
Mass Media and Communications: Croatia. Teach G courses in any aspect
of mass media and communications. Of interest are legal issues of mass
media, mass media and wartime society. Conduct research. Affiliation
to be arranged.

Any Field: Bahrain. Teach primarily UG courses with some
G-level-equivalent courses in any field.  Arabic language is an asset
but not a requirement. University of Bahrain, Manama.
 
Any Field: Belarus. Opportunities are available for lecturers at the G
level, but only at the UG level in the liberal arts.  Affiliation will
be with universities or pedagogical and polytechnic institutes
administered by the Belarusian Ministry of Education.
 
Any Field: Cameroon. Teach in any field.  Moderate to fluent French
strongly preferred for the Universities of Yaounde I and II; French
desirable but not required for the University of Buea. Universities of
Yaounde I and II, and the University of Buea.
 
Any Field: Colombia. Teach G or upper-level UG courses, conduct
seminars. Fluent Spanish required. Affiliation to be determined,
depending on grantee's specialization.
 
Any Field: El Salvador. Applications for lecturing will be considered
in any discipline. Fluent Spanish required. Various institutions.
 
Any Field: Eritrea. Teach UG courses in pure and applied sciences,
social sciences, business, law, liberal arts and languages. Asmara
University.
 
Any Field: Estonia. Opportunities are available for lecturers at the
UG and G levels. Affiliations are possible with major universities and
research institutes located in Tallinn and Tartu. Affiliation will be
with universities or pedagogical and polytechnic institutes
administered by the Estonian Ministry of Education.
 
Any Field: Ethiopia. Teaching opportunities in a wide range of
fields. Addis Ababa University.
 
Any Field: Kuwait. Teach UG courses. For those with Arabic language,
there are openings in every faculty except medicine. Arabic language
fluency useful; English is a common second language. Kuwait
University.
 
Any Field: Latvia. Opportunities are available for lecturers at the UG
and G levels. Affiliation will be with universities or pedagogical and
polytechnic institutes administered by the Latvian Ministry of
Education.
 
Any Field: Lithuania. Opportunities are available for lecturers at the
G level, but only at the UG level in the liberal arts. Affiliation
will be with universities or pedagogical and polytechnic institutes
administered by the Lithuanian Ministry of Education.
 
Any Field: Mexico. Applications will be accepted in the social
sciences, humanities, arts, and sciences to teach courses at UG or G
level. Applicants seeking affiliations outside the Mexico City area
are of particular interest. Fluent Spanish highly desirable, although
Spanish not required for G teaching awards in science, engineering, or
U.S. history.
 
Any Field: Moldova. Opportunities are available for lecturers at the G
level, but only at the UG level in the liberal arts. Affiliation will
be with universities or pedagogical and polytechnic institutes
administered by the Moldovan Ministry of Education.
 
Any Field: Morocco. Assignments may be at UG and/or G levels in higher
education institutions throughout Morocco.
 
Any Field: Morocco. Applicants may propose activities in which at
least 1 course is taught at a Moroccan institution of higher learning
and the remaining time is spent on research.
 
Any Field: Panama. Applications for lecturing will be considered in
any discipline. Humanities and social sciences preferred. In most
cases good Spanish required. University of Panama, Santa Maria La
Antigua University, or Technological University of Panama.
 
Any Field: Peru. Teach G or UG courses or conduct seminars and
workshops in grantee's area of specialization. Good knowledge of
Spanish required in most fields. Affiliations to be arranged with
Peruvian universities and organizations in accord with scholar's
specialization and preference.
 
Any Field: Peru. Grantee will conduct own research in his/her area of
interest and teach 1 semester-long course or workshops related to
research project. Working knowledge of Spanish required in most
fields. Affiliations to be arranged with Peruvian universities and
research organizations in accord with scholar's specialization and
preference.
 
Any Field: Poland. Awards to conduct research in any field. Polish-
language ability commensurate with the requirements of the project is
expected. Affiliations possible with universities or institutes of the
Academy of Sciences.
 
Any Field: Qatar. Teach courses and/or conduct research in any field.
Knowledge of Arabic is an advantage but is not required except for
those fields explicitly dealing with Arabic language, literature,
history, or folklore.
 
Any Field: Saudi Arabia. Teach UG/G courses and/or lecture and conduct
research in any field. King Saud University, Riyadh; King Abdulaziz
University, Jeddah. Arabic helpful but not required.
 
Any Field: Slovak Republic. Research applications accepted in all
fields.
 
Any Field: Tunisia. Teach UG courses in any academic or professional
field in a Tunisian university. Fluent French required in all fields
except TEFL and American or English literature.
 
Any Field: Tunisia. Activities may include teaching, conducting
research, giving lectures to public or otherwise specially invited
audiences, conducting seminars or workshops for G/teaching staff,
supervising theses, engaging in curriculum development. French fluency
required for teaching.
 
Any Field: Ukraine. Opportunities are available for lecturers at the G
level, but only at the UG level in the liberal arts. Affiliation will
be with universities or pedagogical and polytechnic institutes
administered by the Ukrainian Ministry of Education.
 
Any Field: United Arab Emirates. Teach courses and/or conduct research
in all fields. Arabic language proficiency necessary for nonscientific
fields; colloquial Arabic useful for all awards, though not required.
United Arab Emirates University, Al Ain.
 
Any Field: West Bank. Awards may be made to scholars for lecturing
and/or research in any field. Applicants should indicate preferred
host institution.
 
Any Field: Yemen. Teach courses and/or conduct research in any field.
Arabic language fluency required. Affiliation at Aden University or
Sanaa University.
 
Fulbright Border Program: Mexico. Any field considered. Teach UG or G
courses or conduct research in a Mexican border institution. Eligible
candidates must be from U.S. institutions located along Mexican
border. Grantees live at home but spend 1-2 days per week in Mexico on
teaching or research assignment. Fluent Spanish required.
 
Cross-Cultural Studies on Contemporary Issues: Korea. Conduct research
on topics relevant to contemporary social and cultural interaction
between Korea and the United States. Proposals involving collaborative
research with a Korean colleague are preferred. Affiliation to be
determined.
