Well, one of the latest British imports, Priest, has hit our
shores, and I find the controversy over this film interesting.
Miramax Films is handling U.S. distribution/marketing, and it
seems to get that deal the director had to something she didn't have to
do anywhere else.... cut the film from 105 to 97 minutes. And guess
what got cut, per research previews? Too much violence--nope. Too
much "bad" language--nope. Too much homosexual sex-- yaas! Actually,
it seems that it wasn't gay sex that has caused so many problems, but
just too much sex, period. Test audiences evidently reacted badly
to some scenes, saying it was okay to see some of "that" onscreen,
but not to see see too much of it.
Okay, this from the same folks who allow their children to
watch the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers on Sat. Morn. TV, and don't
care about more "Die Hard"/Rambo/Arnie movies?
I think the director hit it correctly (Antonia Bird):
"Apparently, bare male bottoms are not acceptable in the United
States of America. So we had to remove them. And this makes me
laugh, because I come from a country [England] that has no problems
with that, but banned Natural Born Killers for its violence. You
know, we don't think violence is acceptable-- but we think sex is
great. You guys [America] like violence and hate sex!"
I guess that says that. Doug Simpson
