Organised in association with Auckland University of Technology (Schools
of Communication Studies and Art & Design, Faculty of Design and
Creative Technologies) and the University of Auckland (Department of
Film, Television and Media Studies, Faculty of Arts).
EXPANDING DOCUMENTARY: SOUND, IMAGE, TEXT 2011 is the eighth biennial
documentary conference held in Aotearoa New Zealand. Arising out of a
‘small country’ context, the event has been distinguished over the
years by its concern to engage artists, makers, academics, writers,
industry professionals and community activists interested in questions
of theory and practice.
Focusing on non-fiction and documentary-related work produced within
Aotearoa, Australia and the Asia Pacific region, the conference includes
presentations of works-in-progress or recently completed works, as well
as academic papers.
In 2011, the overarching, interdisciplinary ethos of Expanding
Documentary continues the event’s emphasis on new and revised directions
in thinking and practice while keeping in sight significant questions of
subjectivity, embodiment, ethics, history, politics, economy and
technology in the process of making and interpreting documentary works.
Four key areas of interest guide programming:
1. Ways in which culturally distinctive knowledge systems inform the
production, representation and interpretation of documentary work.
2. The mediation of documentary through augmented realities, mobile
media, web 2.0 apps, interactive game technology and other digital
platforms.
3. Thinking practices through production, creativity and pedagogy.
4. Political and social documentary screens – large and small.
Keynote guests include Professor Jon Dovey (Director, Digital Cultures
Research Centre, UWE) - most recently involved with organizing the

Other guests representing a cross-section of Indigenous, filmmaker,
photographer and digital interface interests are to be confirmed in the

Expanding Documentary welcomes papers and works (moving image,
photography, installation, sound, digital and multimedia) that engage
creatively and critically with the following questions:
** What has changed and what remains the same when thinking about,
making and distributing documentary in digital environments?
** In what ways can practices of participation, collaboration, and
location in place and time be thought differently - and how might this
inform the ‘doing’ of practice? How do shifts in social, political,
economic and cultural environments impact on documentary work locally?
Globally? In what ways do identity and subjectivity currently influence
forms of documentary expression?
** How do we conceive of the relationships between history, theory and
practice of documentary – as makers, as educators, as writers?
** How do technologies and their uses factor in present day making,
teaching and thinking around documentary matters?

PANEL STRUCTURE
3-4 papers/presentations, 20 minute with 20-30 minutes discussion time
2 parallel strands of panels
In the interests of peer review processes, panels have not been
pre-constituted. However, suggestions for panel topics are welcome and
updates will be posted to the website.
SUBMISSION AND REVIEW PROCEDURE
250 word abstracts submitted to [log in to unmask] by Friday June 11.
SuAbstracts may be accompanied by images of your work (exclusive of your
name) if creative practice is your focus.
Please include the title of your paper or work, but not your name.
In addition to the abstract, please include a separate front page
detailing:
* title of the paper or work
* name and contact details
* programming strand your paper or work best fits within (as a
guideline)
* technical requirements for presentation
* institutional or other work affiliation
* a brief biography
* links to websites displaying work are welcome if you prefer single
blind peer review for creative work
Abstracts will go through a double blind peer review process (or single
blind review where necessary for creative practice). Each abstract will
be reviewed by at least two referees. Notification of acceptance will
be sent by the beginning of August.
Confirmation of attendance will be required within a month of
notification.
Every attempt will be made to include all successful peer-reviewed
papers/presentations. A waitlist will be established in the event that
not all peer-reviewed papers/presentations can be programmed.
PUBLICATION OPTIONS
A book of published abstracts for conference presentations.
Conference proceedings published online and comprising:
* double and single blind peer reviewed: 5000 word full papers and
audio/visual works (with media links) submitted by October 25; book of
abstracts
* non peer-reviewed: papers and links to audio/visual works
