Call for Papers: ‘The Working-Class in Canadian Film’

An anthology of essays edited by Malek Khouri (University of Calgary)
and Darrell Varga (York University) to be published by a Canadian
University Press.

This book brings together recent scholarship on the representation of
class in Canadian film studies and encourages debate over the
privileging of nationalism in Canadian film criticism. We invite
analysis of the representation and negotiation of class and specifically
labour in films/videos, within specific moments in Canadian film
history, by
specific directors and movements, and through institutional practices in

the areas of feature film, television, documentary, and independent
(short/experimental) film/video.

The collection shall include work of a critical, historical, and
theoretical focus. We especially invite essays which negotiate the
intersections of race, gender, and sexuality with respect to class. The
scope of this book is interdisciplinary and is intended to be of
interest to scholars and students of film, media, cultural studies, and
history, as well as activists.

Essays should not exceed 10,000 words. First draft of the paper should
be sent by October 1, 2001. Please send a 500 words proposal of your
