History’s most commercially successful film director continues to attract accolades
and fierce criticism in equal measure.

During the last year, three major new books have afforded Spielberg’s work a
sustained level of academic attention that previously was lacking: Warren Buckland’s
Directed by Steven Spielberg: Poetics of the Contemporary Hollywood Blockbuster,
Lester D. Friedman’s Citizen Spielberg and Nigel Morris’s The Cinema of Steven
Spielberg: Empire of Light.

Now the three authors have combined forces to convene an international conference.
This is bringing together scholars to debate the significance of Spielberg’s work –
whether in a spirit of celebration, condemnation or non-partisan (albeit positioned)
academic enquiry.

The New Review of Film and Television Studies will publish a selection of papers
from the conference in a special issue at the start of 2009.

Panel speakers include:

Victoria Amador, Heriot-Watt University
Alex Anthony-Lewczuk, University of Lincoln
Gary Bettinson, Lancaster University
Lucy Bolton, University of London
William Brown
Charles Burnett, Indiana University
David Caldevilla Dominguez, Universidad Complutense de Madrid
James Clarke, University of Sussex
Andrew Gordon, University of Florida
Leighton Grist, University of Winchester
Martin Hall, University of Bolton
Benjamin Halligan, University of Salford
Hannah Hamad, University of East Anglia
Rory Kelly, Belfast
Rodregues King-Dorset, University of Lincoln
Derek Paget, University of Reading (to be confirmed)
Beatriz Pena, New York University
Richard Rushton, Lancaster University
James Russell, De Montfort University
Antonio Sanchez-Escalonilla, University Rey Juan Carlos
Jennifer Schneider, Colorado School of Mines
Ryan John Shand, University of Glasgow
David Sterritt, Columbia University
Fredrick Wasser, Brooklyn College
Jim Whalley, University of East Anglia

to [log in to unmask] as soon as possible. If you are interested in
