It's my impression that most "most expensive films" have been critical,
if not box-office failures.  The Burton-Taylor CLEOPATRA was supposed
to have been the most expensive up until its day, and there were films
like HEAVEN'S GATE and THE LAST ACTION HERO (which was very pricey, if
not Most Expensive).
 
At least some of these films, such as TLAH, seem to have been able to
recoup costs in video and foreign markets, though.
