There was a note in one of the cans instructing projectionists to show it
in 1:1.85 (in the UK at least).

You're right - very few cinemas can show anything except 1:1.85 and 'scope.
 That is why FANTASIA 2000 was cropped from the Imax format for a general
release in 1:1.85, and why the Sorcerer's Apprentice sequence was optically
reduced to 1:1.33 within a 1:1.85 hard matte.
