The Department of Communication and the Department of English at Northern
Illinois University are sponsoring a four week summer program on "Media
and Culture in Ireland" at Dublin City University from June 23 to July 21.
In its fifth year, the program focuses on Ireland's struggle to define its
own cultural identity in a world of American and British media domination.
Students learn about Irish social and economic history and literary
traditions as a backdrop to understanding Ireland's development of a
modern, indigenous media industry--with intensive screenings of historical
and contemporary Irish films. Prominent Irish media/literary artists and
academics present guest lectures in addition to lectures by NIU faculty
Jeffrey Chown and Robert Self. Students may earn six hours of graduate or
undergraduate credit in Communication or in English.
