A point about audience schemata that I thought might be of interest
toward the end of the academic year:
The other day a graduate student of mine was talking about discussing
SCHINDLER'S LIST with some high school students. Among other things,
the students said that the film was a good way to start discussion of
the Holocaust because a documentary would be "boring."
Well, she challenged them, why do you say that SCHINDLER'S LIST is
*not* a documentary?
Because, they replied, a documentary has those *lines* running down
through the picture! (Obviously, those old 16mm. prints are still in
use!)
