The difference between listserv and usenet is similar to the difference
between having a subscription to a magazine that is sent to you personally
at an address of your choice and going down to the local news dealer and
browse through the selection of magazines available.

Usenet is useful for such browsing while listserv mailings are useful
to ensure that one gets everything sent out. On most usenet sites
posts are available for a limited time (much like the on-sale dates
for printed magazines). If one wants to be sure to get everything
the option of a listserv sub will still be available.
