As a Mac user, I've found that a combination of Mac the Ripper 
(freeware) and two inexpensive software programs, Popcorn (DVD copy) 
and Cinematize (DVD Movie Clip Extractor) work great.  But of course I 
use these only for the purposes of my own research.
