Vested interest alert: I work for WNMU-TV, Public TV 13 for
Michigan's Upper Peninsula & ne Wisc...

Certainly, letting your sen/reps know is the best idea--for all
the talk of corruption, etc., most of them still(or finally) are
receptive to public opinion.  Do your best to make it individual;
not just a copy of a form letter. Tell them you support the
concept of public broadcasting, that you watch it, that you
support it financially and believe they should, too. Explain that
you get from PBS what you can't find anywhere else.

Then -- support your station! Many of us have fundraisers coming
up in August, but don't wait until then. Write them a letter, if
you can't afford to pledge, or give them a call. Tell them you
like what they're doing (or that you don't--that's fine, too), and
that you're behind them.

The first thing will help stop anti-PBS (and by extension, *all*
non-commercial ventures) legislation; the second will help some
face another day.  Sigh.
