It is interesting how the genre has been sidetracked in recent years to
Movies-of-the-Week and to horror films. But ROSEMARY'S BABY, CARRIE, and
ALIENS are all clearly in the mold. ALIENS is a particularly interesting
one to show students since it seems on the face of it to be a "new"
woman's film, but in fact winds up inscribing Ripley in the same old role,
and moreover negatively portraying motherhood, at least insofar as the Alien
is concerned.
