I would suggest that you look at one of these:
_W.R.: Mysteries of the Organism_ (Dusan Makavejev, Yugoslavia, 1971):
anti-Vietnam war sentiments combined with speculations on William Reich's
rather ludicrous sexual psychology.
_Daisies_/_Sedmikrasky_ (Vera Chytilova, Czechoslovakia, 1966): charming
avant-garde meditation on freedom, society and brutality.
_Lessons of Darkness_ (Werner Herzog, Germany, 1992): lyrical, if that's the
word, documentary about post-Gulf war Kuwait.
_Blackboards_ (Samira Makhmalbaf, Iran, 2000): a teacher on the Iranian
border tries to teach Kurdish refugees. Rather mannered and more indebted to
Kafka than anything else.
All of these should be easily available on VHS or DVD.
Hope this helps.
Yours
David
