POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT

Director of The Institute for New Media Studies
School of Journalism & Mass Communication

The University of Minnesota School of Journalism and Mass Communication
seeks applications and nominations for the Director of the Institute for New
Media Studies. The appointment will be either (1) a full-time, nine-month
position with tenure, as associate professor or professor, together with a
nine-month or twelve-month appointment as Program Director, dependent upon
qualifications and experience, and consistent with collegiate and university
policies; or 2) a temporary appointment as assistant professor, associate
professor, or professor (dependent on qualifications and experience, and
consistent with collegiate and university policies), annually renewable for
up to six years, based on performance; or 3) a full-time, twelve-month
academic/professional position as Program Director, renewable on the basis
of performance. The appointment begins fall semester, 1999.

The Director of the Institute of New Media Studies will help lead a major
new initiative that will invest an infusion of new legislative funds,
private funds, and redirected college resources to revitalize this
highly-respected School. Over the next four years, we anticipate that new
faculty will be hired, the School's facilities will be completely remodeled
and updated with all new state-of-the-art equipment, and the Institute for
New Media Studies will be opened. The Director of the Institute will be an
important voice in setting the new direction for the School.

The mission of the Institute is to help establish the University of
Minnesota as a premier institution for research and innovation in new media.
The Institute will facilitate basic and applied research to create new
knowledge about the uses, technologies, and effects of new media; foster
collaboration among faculties and students at the University of Minnesota;
advance teaching about new media in communication curricula throughout the
University; serve as a catalyst for entrepreneurial partnerships with
industries and institutions engaged in new media innovation; and function as
a resource for teachers, researchers, students, industry, government, and
public sector organizations.

The Institute for New Media Studies will bring together faculty from many
University of Minnesota colleges and departments who are studying and
implementing new media. Local, national, and international communication
professionals engaged in work with new media will also be invited to
collaborate through the Institute on partnerships with scholars. The
Institute will provide a venue to develop courses and programs emphasizing
new media across disciplinary lines. In addition, the Institute will serve
as a catalyst for entrepreneurial partnerships with media industries and
institutions engaged in new media innovation and experimentation.

Required qualifications for a tenured or temporary faculty appointment:

* Master's degree;

* Outstanding record of academic accomplishment related to the analysis or
development of new communications media;

* Evidence of teaching effectiveness;

* Accomplishments of the quality to merit faculty appointment with tenure at
a major research university.

Preferred qualifications for a tenured or temporary faculty appointment:

* Earned doctorate;

* Exceptional record of scholarly, administrative, or professional
accomplishments of the quality to merit faculty appointment with tenure at a
major research university.

Required qualifications for a professional/academic appointment as Director:

* Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience;

* Outstanding record of professional accomplishment related to the
professional application and/or development of new communications media;

* Evidence of teaching effectiveness or strong promise of excellence in
teaching;

* Overall qualifications sufficient to qualify the applicant to lead faculty
peers in an active and competitive research institute at a major research
university.

Preferred qualifications for a professional/academic appointment as
Director:

* Master’s degree;

* Exceptional record of administrative or professional accomplishment.

The Director of the Institute will report to the Director of the School of
Journalism and Mass Communication. The Director will have substantial
responsibility for designing and setting the course for the new Institute
for New Media Studies in the School. The Director of the Institute for New
Media Studies will lead the creation of new, nationally visible programs and
help the School fulfill its central mission of educating communications
professionals and scholars for the new media environment. The Director will
teach and advise graduate and undergraduate students as appropriate, will
develop strong ties to the professional community, and will serve on
appropriate committees.

The position of associate professor or professor carries indefinite tenure;
the directorship ("Program Director," classification 9340) is an initial
three-year term, followed by annual renewals, based on performance and
funding.

The temporary position of assistant professor, associate professor, or
professor is annually renewable for up to six years based on performance;
the directorship ("Program Director," classification 9340) is an initial
three-year term, followed by annual renewals, based on performance and
funding.

An academic/professional appointee to the directorship ("Program Director,"
classification 9340) is appointed for an initial three-year term, followed
by annual renewals, based on performance and funding.

To apply, send a letter of application, a current resume or curriculum
vitae, samples of research and/or a narrative statement on research goals
and plans, and an evaluation of teaching performance, if available. In
addition, please request letters addressing your scholarly and/or
administrative achievements from three evaluators, to be sent directly to
the search committee. To nominate a candidate for the position of Director,
send a letter of nomination and the candidate’s current resume or curriculum
vitae.

Review of applications and nominations will begin April 1, and will continue
until the position is filled.
