FELLOWSHIP IN AGE STUDIES
ROCKEFELLER FOUNDATION FELLOWSHIPS
IN THE HUMANITIES
1997 - 1998
CENTER FOR TWENTIETH CENTURY STUDIES
UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN - MILWAUKEE
The Center for Twentieth Century Studies at the University of
Wisconsin - Milwaukee offers two fellowships for the 1997 - 98
academic year for scholars in the humanities to pursue research in
age studies in the general context of the theory and criticism of
difference. We encourage research proposals that engage issues of the
representation and self-representation of age in texts (literary,
media, theoretical) and their contexts (social, political,
historical, psychological), as well as proposals that seek to study
how the discourse of age, which is based on the largely unexamined
binary of young and old, is itself produced; Theories of generations,
of autobiography and biography, and of gender are all at stake, as in
the production of age theory itself. Our focus is on the later years
of the life course but is not limited to it.
We encourage applications from scholars outside the United
States, especially those who will be working on issues of age in
terms of global culture. Fellows will receive a stipend of $35,000;
additional support is available to help defray the costs of health
insurance. Applicants are encouraged to seek matching support from
their home institutions. Fellowships are limited to postdoctoral
applicants (Ph.D or equivalent).
APPLICANTS MUST INCLUDE FOUR COPIES OF THE FOLLOWING:
1). A proposal of eight pages (double spaced) describing a well
defined topic of research in age studies.
2). A curriculum vitae.
3). Offprints of two articles or recently completed manuscripts.
*Applicants should arrange for three letters of recommendation to be
sent directly to the Center. Inquiries and application materials
