No one has yet mentioned Pasolini's versions of "Decameron" and "Canterbury
Tales", or another sort of film "Brother Sun, Sister Moon" that had a lot
of popularity a while ago.  Then there is Tarkovsky's "Andrei Rublev", but
that might be historical too late or not the right country/area.
