I'll take a wild guess about "Why Syracuse?"  Robert Thompson is a buddy
of David Bianculli, author of Teleliteracy: Taking Television Seriously,
and TV critic for the Phila. Inquirer and NY Post.  I'm guessing he did a
little PR work among the eastern press.
 
That said, Thompson has done some excellent work at Syracuse and I think
it's time it was recognized.
