Eric's linking of the arrival at the castle in ENCHANTED APRIL and
NOSFERATU seems plausible enough.  You may enjoy looking at the "original"
welcome to a scary landscape sequence in, not surprisingly, the "original"
NOSFERATU (Murnau 1922), where many of the techniques of this now cliche
arrival moment were invented.
