            John:
            I believe the film that you're referring to is
            called STARK LOVE.  It was shot in the mountains
            of North Carolina in 1927 and was directed by
            Karl Brown.  There's an excellent account of the
            making of the picture in Kevin Brownlow's THE WAR,
            THE WEST AND THE WILDERNESS.  The book also indi-
            cates that there's a print of the film at MOMA.
