CALL FOR PAPERS
SCMS March 19-24, 2014, Seattle WA
Panel proposal on Remediations of Blackface in Global Cinema

Paper proposals are sought for a comparative or cross-cultural survey on the implementation of blackface in any national cinema and in diverse media. The focus would be on contemporary remediations of blackface, although historical examinations could also be applicable. To what extent can or does 'blacking up' enact subversion or, alternately, the reinscription of racist tropes past and present?

Please send a 250-word abstract, a 5-source bibliography and a short bio by Friday, August 5, 2013 to [log in to unmask] Notifications about acceptance or rejection of proposal will be sent by August 10th (the deadline for conference proposals is August 30th).
