Regarding Cal Pryluck's query, and to everyone in general,
Lawrence Levine's "Highbrow/Lowbrow" is a fun book on popular
entertainment in the 19th/early 20th century. I have seen
it discounted for $5 or so; I don't know why, it was very
well received.
