Unless already mentioned, Richard Slotkin's final work in his monumental
trilogy, GUNFIGHTER NATION deals with links between the western and
detective story. I think he has some pages on RED HARVEST.
As for generic blurring, Robin Wood's "Ideology, Genre, Auteur" which first
appeared some twenty years ago, already recognized this fact in its argument
against rigid definitions of genre and the proposal that they represent
different definitions of key problems in American culture.
