Special Call for Submissions: “The Documentary Tradition”

Sponsored by:
Film and History: An Interdisciplinary Journal of Film and Television Studies
(Volume 38: 1 – 2, 2008)
www.filmandhistory.org

Editor: Dr. Loren PQ Baybrook

The editor invites submissions for a special year of Film & History: An
Interdisciplinary Journal of Film and Television Studies (Vol. 38:1-2,
2008). The topic is “The Documentary Tradition”a timely subject after the
2006 biennial meeting of the Center for the Study of Film and History
(publisher of the journal) in Dallas, where over 500 scholars delivered papers.

The first volume (38:1, 2008) will focus on a spectrum of documentaries in
chronological orderof both international and US vintage. Classic
documentaries (see web site for hints about method) will be examined and
placed in their cultural contexts. Papers on films from Nanook and March
of Time to The War Room and An Inconvenient Truth are welcomed.

The second volume (38.2, 2008) will examine a variety of topics and issues
for documentaries across cultures and borders. The possibilities here are
broad, but we welcome papers that stress the role of the documentary in
interpreting, reflecting, or attempting to change history. Race, class,
policy, and the impact of media are likely
topics. The 2008 conference touched on Women’s documentaries, the City, Asian
identity, the New Deal, World War II, Canadian documentary, but other topic
points are invited.

Guidelines: Film & History (vol. 38:1 – 2, 2008)
Each volume will contain four to six essays that will undergo a peer review
process. International submissions are welcomed and encouraged. The journal
requires MLA format, although international and interdisciplinary
conventions may be substituted (for example, British spelling and
punctuation). Endnotes are mandatory, and authors should provide a brief
biography. Relevant illustrations are strongly encouraged and must be
submitted with the final draft.

Submission Deadlines: Film & History (vol. 38: 1-2, 2008)

Film & History: vol. 38:1, 2008: Initial Manuscript Due: September 1, 2007
Film & History: vol. 38:2, 2008: Initial Manuscript Due: February 1, 2008

Send manuscripts (10-20 pages, 2500-5000 words) by email attachment (in
Microsoft Word) or by postal mail:
