Herbert Marshall (not the actor) has written extensively on Eisenstein.
Sorry I don't have any specific references.
 
Marshall writes from a unique perspective: he was one of the few
Westerners to study at the Moscow Film school during the time that
Eisenstein taught there.  Jay Leyda is another.  I don't remember
the titles of work by either man.
