In answer to your first query - Russel Nye, an English professor at MSU
wrote a book titled "The Unembarrassed Muse" which is a study of mass media
and how it reflects the society of the time. He was intrumental is what is
now known as Pop Culture. The above mentioned book is fascinating reading.
