THE FILMS OF JORIS IVENS
 March 20 - 28, 2002
Walter Reade Theater

Career Survey Reveals Extraordinary Range of Iconoclastic European Director.
Symposium, Catalogue, and Photographic Exhibition Accompany Series.

Joris Ivens's international reputation was established with the release of
The Bridge in 1928 and over the next sixty years he was one of the most
widely traveled film directors, working in places as diverse as Eastern
Europe, Southeast Asia, Cuba, China, Mali, and Chile. Beginning on March
20, The Film Society of Lincoln Center, European Foundation Joris Ivens
(EFJI), and Red Diaper Productions will present CINEMA WITHOUT BORDERS: THE
CINEMA OF JORIS IVENS, a long-anticipated retrospective featuring six new
prints that charts the singular career of this iconoclastic European
director. An exhibition of rare photographs, the publication of a
catalogue, and a symposium on the filmmaker's work will take place in
conjunction with the series, which runs through March 28 at the Walter
Reade Theater.

A selection of rarely exhibited photos by and about Ivens from the
extensive collections of the EFJI will be on view in the Roy and Frieda
Furman Gallery at the Walter Reade Theater throughout the retrospective.

A symposium on Ivens's work, with leading film scholars and special guest
Marceline Loridan, will take place in the Furman Gallery of the Walter
Reade on Saturday, March 23, and a series catalogue will be available then.
(More below.)

Following the Walter Reade Theater screenings the Ivens retrospective will
travel to eight venues in North America from April through June 2002,
including Washington, D.C., Boston, Ithaca, Cleveland, Chicago, Berkeley,
Toronto, and Vancouver. For further information, please visit
www.reddiaper.com.

This retrospective, exhibition, symposium, catalogue and national tour have
been made possible with the generous support of Netherlands Culture Fund,
Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands, Ministry of Education,
Culture & Science of the Netherlands, Consulate General of the Netherlands
in New York, Filmmuseum in Amsterdam, Holland Film, and The French Cultural
Services.
