I seem to remember a short scene in Altman's Three Women with someone
(Shelley
Duvall?) being shocked to discover Sissy Spacek's aged parents making
love.

You remember the scene correctly. Spacek's parents were played by film
director John Cromwell and his real life wife, actress Ruth Nelson. On the
commentary on the Criterion DVD, Altman said he included the scene because
he thought no one had ever thought much about the sex lives of older
people.
