Jane Gaines's book is _Contested Culture: The Image, the Voice, and
the Law._ Chapel Hill: U of North Carolina P, 1991.

Anyone interested should also be on the lookout for the article by
Rosemary Coombe in a forthcoming issue of Discourse (14.2, Summer 1992).
Coombe talks about the appropriation of mainstream images by fanzine
writers, gay male appropriation of female stars in camp subculture and
lesbians' appropriation of James Dean. There's also a good summary
of the legal discourse surrounding the ownership of the celebrity
persona.
