Strategic Research Scholarship: Archiving the Past: New Zealand’s
National Identity and the Moving Image
The Film and Media Studies Programmes, School of English, Film,
Theatre, and Media Studies, propose a Strategic Research Scholarship
for a PhD project in conjunction with The New Zealand Film Archive in
Wellington, New Zealand, which offers the opportunity for innovative
and nationally important archival work. The specific focus of the
archival research will be on the issue of imaging or representing
National Identity in relation to Place, Space, Cultural and Political
Identity. Suggested areas of focus may include, but are not
restricted to:
Archiving the Past: An Exploration of National/Maori Identity in Film
and Television in New Zealand.
Destination New Zealand: Archival Research into the Cinematic
Representation of Landscape, Place and People.
Documenting the Past: Archival Research into the New Zealand
Documentary.
The Domestic Past: An Analysis of the importance of Home Movies to
the Imagined Community of New Zealand.
The Family as Represented in New Zealand Private Film and Video
Collections.
Applicants are expected to have a first class honours degree (or
equivalent) and skills and research experience appropriate for the
topic. The scholarship is valued at $20,000 plus a contribution to
tuition fees. Students from New Zealand and overseas are encouraged
to apply.
