There doesn't seem to be much on gender in Hong Kong films though it's
certainly a rich area. For one thing, HK films have a long tradition of
women warriors that's pretty much missing in Western culture. Many martial
arts films have numerous women fighters and there's plenty of action films
with women protagonists.
Plus there are films like Swordsman II and The East Is Red (Swordsman III)
which features a magician who can only obtain ultimate power by castrating
himself. The role is played by a woman (Brigitte Lin) but the character is
treated as a man in both films, even having a woman lover. There's also a
similarly disorienting gender swapping in Sex & Zen II.
