Film & History is delighted to announce that the international premiere of 130 Year Road Trip Live—a live participatory documentary—will be the featured event at our 2017 conference. The film/performance explores the history of spatial planning in Nazi Germany, its understandings of home, nation, and belonging, and its roots in the North American colonial practices of 1883.

Live participatory documentary is a form of expanded cinema that merges documentary with performance, interactivity, improv, and audience participation. An innovation in interactivity, this cinema-performance is comprised of a deconstructed history documentary with live narration, followed by a discussion and communal edit of the content based on audience comments and feedback, using experimental visuals and interviews processed through Max/Jitter VJing Software. The Live Documentary, a recent evolution in expanded cinema, has emerged at festivals including Sundance and Hot Docs, combining narration and music performed on stage, with documentary film projected on screen. Live participatory documentary invites the audience to probe screened history and guide the content and images in a formal cinematic response to Robert Berkhofer Jr.’s invocation of history as multiple perspectives and polyvocalities, and Hayden White’s call for a historiophoty that draws upon modern and post-modern art practices.

About the filmmakers:

130 Year Road Trip Live is directed and live-edited by Kim Nelson, composed and live-mixed by Brent Lee, and narrated and presented by historian and Fulbright scholar, Robert L. Nelson. All three are Associate professors at the University of Windsor, Canada.
