DOCUMENTARIES ABOUT MULTICULTURAL FILM DIRECTORS AVAILABLE FROM THIRD WORLD
NEWSREEL.

DEVOTION (85 min./Color/2000)
Director: Barbara Hammer

Devotion investigates the extremely complex and hierarchical relationships
among a loyal group of filmmakers who dedicated up to 30 years making films
for one man - Ogawa Shinsuke. These heartbreaking and sometimes funny
stories have never been told on film before. Rare footage, stills, and
diaries from archives as well as interviews with Oshima Nagisa and Robert
Kramer make this historical inquiry visually exciting and valuable.

SEMBENE: THE MAKING OF AFRICAN CINEMA (60 min./Color/1994)
Director: Manthia Diawara

This rich documentary follows the legendary Senegalese filmmaker Sembene
Ousmane from the Pan African Film Festival in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso
back to the streets of Dakar and his Galle Ceddo home at Yoff, overlooking
the sea. Revisiting several locations of his films, Sembene Ousmane
reminisces about his career and discusses his craft.

THE CINEMATIC JAZZ OF JULIE DASH (26 min./Color/1992)
Director: Yvonne Welbon

This is an in-depth interview with filmmaker Julie Dash, whose first
feature film, Daughters of the Dust, became a critical success. Here, Dash
discusses the trials and triumphs of two decades of filmmaking by African
American women.
