                         CINEMA ONE HUNDRED YEARS
 
                     A retrospective and current look,
                  flash-back and panoramic view of cinema

   One hundred years ago, all around the world, we started hearing about
strange apparatus bearing curious names: Cinematographe, Kinetograph,
Bioscope, ect., describing a strange machine that would later give birth to
an industry, an art, a language... Cinema is no longer that scientific
curiosity as in it's beginnings, however, the terms used to define it seem
somewhat out-of-date. With the appearance of new audio-visual technologies
and an ongoing reevaluation of the history cinema, we can no longer define
the medium in the same way as before.
 
   For its 15th colloquy, beeing held from november 16th through 19th 1995,
the Quebec association for cinema studies (AQEC) proposes to reexamine the
definition of cinema, one hundred years after its invention and
commercialisation, along three perspectives: aesthetic, sociological and
historic. Moreover, part of this colloquy will be devoted to the historical
research conducted by the GRAFICS (Groupe de recherche sur l'avenement et
la formation des institutions cinematographiques et sceniques based at the
Universite de Montreal).
 
   To insure a greater cohesion amongst the participants, one restriction
applies, that we wish to be more inspiring than compelling: your analysis
should take into account time and space. Naturally we wish to study cinema
in regards to it's past and future, but also in regards to other media and
the societies where it thrives.  On that note, here are a few
suggestions. Aesthetic perspective: What is the specificity of cinema
compared to other art forms, other media? What will become of cinema faced
with new technologies, computer generated films or interactive video
libraries? Sociological perspective: What is the place of cinema studies
within a changing university, a basin of knowledge? Has cinema become an
art form for cinephiles only, after having been part of the mass culture?
Historical perspective: What is the place of cinema within history itself?
What is cinema history today?
 
   Your proposed papers should therefore go along one of these general
perspectives, while at the same time putting foward a new point of view
based upon a reflexion of the history of cinema and it's present
situation. We look foward to receiving your proposals before april 30th
1995. These should include your coordinates, occupation or formation, and a
summary of your intervention no longer than one page.

     Un coup d'oeil retrospectif et actuel, flash-back et panoramique

   Il y a cent ans etaient annoncees un peu partout dans le monde les
premieres presentations d'appareils baptises de curieux noms:
Cinematographe, Kinetographe, Bioscope, etc., decrivant une etrange machine
qui allait donner naissance a une industrie, un art, un langage... Le
cinema n'est certes plus une curiosite scientifique comme a ses debuts,
mais plusieurs definitions qu'on en a donne appartiennent deja au passe:
7eme art, art muet, art des images animees, etc. Avec l'apparition de
nouvelles technologies audio-visuelles et une reevaluation de l'histoire du
cinema, on ne peut plus definir ce medium de la meme facon qu'auparavant.
 
   Pour son 15eme colloque, qui se tiendra cette annee du 16 au 19 novembre
1995, l'Association Quebecoise des Etudes Cinematographiques se propose de
reetudier la definition du cinema cent ans apres son invention et sa
commercialisation. Nous proposons un reexamen du cinema selon trois
perspectives: esthetique, sociologique et historique. Une partie du
colloque sera d'ailleurs consacree aux recherches historiques menees par le
GRAFICS (Groupe de recherche sur l'avenement et la formation des
institutions cinematographiques et sceniques base a l'Universite de
Montreal).
 
Afin de respecter une certaine cohesion, une consigne sera imposee, que
nous ne voulons pas contraignante mais plutot inspirante: votre analyse
doit tenir compte du temps et de l'espace. Nous voulons bien sur etudier le
cinema par rapport au passe et a l'avenir, mais en tenant aussi compte des
autres media et des societes dans lesquelles il evolue. A ce titre, voici
differentes directions que pourrait prendre votre
communication. Perspective esthetique: Quelle est la specificite du cinema
face aux autres arts et autres media? Que deviendra le cinema face aux
nouvelles technologies, aux films crees par ordinateur, aux videotheques
interactives? Perspective sociologique: Quelle est la place des etudes
cinematographiques dans un savoir et une universite en bouleversement? Le
cinema n'est-il plus qu'un art pour cinephile, apres avoir ete une culture
de masse? Perspective historique: Qu'est-ce que le cinema dans l'histoire
maintenant?  Qu'est-ce que l'histoire du cinema maintenant?
 
   Les propositions de communications sollicitees devraient donc s'inscrire
dans l'une ou l'autre de ces grandes orientations tout en proposant un
point de vue nouveau, a partir d'une reflexion sur l'histoire du cinema et
sur sa situation actuelle. Nous attendons vos propositions de
communications d'ici le 30 avril 1995. Celles- ci devraient comprendre vos
coordonnees, votre occupation ou formation, ainsi qu'un sommaire de votre
intervention ne depassant pas une page.
