Very quickly, Hitchcock's first American film, REBECCA, won the 1940 Oscar
for Best Picture. FOREIGN CORRESPONDENT, SUSPICION, LIFEBOAT, and
SPELLBOUND were all nominated for Best Picture, as his British film, THE
LADY VANISHES, had been. Joan Fontaine won Best Actress for SUSPICION,
making her the only performer to win an Oscar under his direction. Few
others were nominated; those who were included Claude Rains for NOTORIOUS
and Janet Leigh for PSYCHO.

Hitchcock himself was nominated for Best Director five times--for REBECCA,
LIFEBOAT, SPELLBOUND, REAR WINDOW, and PSYCHO. He lost to John Ford (THE
GRAPES OF WRATH), Leo McCarey (GOING MY WAY), Billy Wilder (THE LOST
WEEKEND), Elia Kazan (ON THE WATERFRONT), and Billy Wilder (THE
APARTMENT), respectively.
