This is the third of three postings relating to the ninth annual Society
for Animation Studies conference, to be held in the Netherlands on October
8-12, 1997.  This posting supplies some travel and accommodations
information and includes a registration form; the second gives some
background on the sponsoring instittutions; and the first lists the papers
to be presented.
 
- Registration
From Wednesday afternoon 14.00 hours onwards and every morning during the
conference
at Drift 21, Utrecht
 
- Opening
The conference will be officially opened on Wednesday evening and, at the
invitation of the organizing committee, Nadia Thalmann from the University
of Geneva Switzerland will present the key note lecture about human
modeling animation.
 
 
- Conference Locations/Facilities
The conference will be held at Utrecht University, located in the ancient
heart of the town, in the centre of Utrecht, not far from the railway
station. In addition to a lecture hall for the presentation of papers, a
secretariat and a special room with video equipment will be available
during the conference for activities which have not been planned.
The film programmes will be shown in 't Hoogt Film Theatre, located in a
thirteenth-century building within walking distance from the University
lecture halls.
 
- Utrecht
The city of Utrecht originates from a Roman settlement founded in 48 AD. In
the Middle Ages it developed into a Dutch city, one that ranked first in
size and importance until the 16th century. Today Utrecht still boasts many
unique churches, houses and canals which date from this period of
prosperity. With 230,000 inhabitants Utrecht is the fourth largest city in
the Netherlands. The conference programme is organized around Utrecht
University, the largest university in the country. The university has
25,000 students and is one of the oldest in the land. It was officially
founded in 1636 on the site if a medieval bishop's school. A new university
campus, De Uithof, is located east of the city where most of the
laboratories, the Botanic Gardens and the University Hospital are also
located.
 
Transportation to Utrecht
Utrecht is easy to reach. It is centrally situated in the Netherlands and
lies at the hub of the Dutch motorway and railway networks. Utrecht offers
air travellers good road and rail connections with Schiphol International
Airport (Amsterdam) (40 km).
train           trains leave Schiphol Airport for Utrecht every 30 minutes;
12 and 42 minutes past the hour. The journey takes 40 minutes, changing
trains at Duivendrecht. Cost NLG 12,75 for a single ticket.
taxi            if you phone the Utrecht taxi firm (UTC) in advance (+31
30) 288 80 00, a taxi will be waiting for you. If you call UTC from
Schiphol you will have to wait 40 minutes. Cost: NLG 100. A taxi from
Schiphol costs NLG 150. These are daytime rates.
car             cars can be rented at Schiphol Airport.
 
Transportation in Utrecht:
--bus/tram      a strippenkaart is needed to travel by bus and tram. You
stamp this as you enter. They can be bought at railway stations, post
offices and tobacco kiosks.
--train-taxi    you can share a taxi when you arrive at Utrecht station.
The trein-taxi ticket can be bought at Schiphol station together with your
train ticket. Cost: NLG 6.
