The Society for Animation Studies Conference 2000

The 12th Annual Society for Animation Studies Conference and International Symposium will be held at the University of Trondheim (NTNU), Norway, 7 – 13 August 2000. The event will feature workshops, panels, screenings, scholarly papers, and a special tour among Norwegian mountains and fjords.

The theme of the 2000 conference is Digital Challenges – Expanded Boundaries. Our main focus will be directed to the future. However, this focus can easily be blurred without a proper historical foundation and understanding of evolutions of the past.

How will new technology influence aesthetics, individuals, and institutions? How can previous technological and esthetical (r)evolutions help us understand the changes going on today? New technology is creating a situation where production costs can be reduced to levels not seen before. Does this increase in technological access lead to improved conditions for animators or will counteractions prevent this from happening? What will happen with classic animation techniques in the future? The debate on motion capture techniques has been going on for some time, and the question whether this can be regarded animation or not reveals new challenges. Do we need new definitions and frameworks to understand animation?

Animation is gaining importance in new fields. Both in film production, web-design, video art, and computer games it is now a common technique and tool. This means that research from different branches will be of interest for the conference. We hope to present broad perspectives that reflects the diversity within the current use of animation techniques.

Proposals should include a 25-50 word summary of the presentation suitable for publication in conference-information, as well as a 250-500 word abstract. Also include phone, fax and e-mail contact information. The final call for papers, pre-constituted panels and workshops is 15. February 2000.

Some financial assistance may be available to help students and the underemployed whose work is accepted for presentation at the conference. If you are interested in applying for this assistance, please write a letter of application and send it with your proposal.

The conference will be officially opened 9. August. Ahead of the conference Rune Kreutz and Gunnar Strom invite the participants on a three day voyage to enjoy Norwegian scenery and culture in an international and friendly animated atmosphere.

Monday August 7th
After Lunchtime departure from Trondheim airport/hotel in Trondheim. Busride to the town Krisitansund - home of the bacalao. Further along the fabulous road on the very coast of the Atlantic sea. Atlanterhavsveien: http://www.atlanterhavsveien.no/e_index.html
We stay overnight with possibilities for fishing at Håholmen, the home of viking and explorer Ragnar Thorset at http://www.haholmen.no/
Dinner either in Krisitiansund or at Håholmen.

Tuesday August 8th Tuesday morning bus to Molde - ferry ride to Vestnes across the beautiful Moldefjord - and bus again to the amazing jugend/art noveau-town Aalesund http://www.alesund-tourist.mr.no/
Lunch in Aalesund. Bus to Volda for a snack and drinks before we cruise along the Hjorundfjord and have dinner at the fascinating late 19th century hotel Union at Oye.
This hotel has no web-page yet - actually they have never done any advertising to find guests - it sells itself by reputation. Among the former guests are almost all European royalties over the last century, Norwegian celebrities like Roald Amiundsen, Fritjof Nansen, Edvard Grieg and international authors like Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and Karen Blixen. Kaiser Wilhelm of Germany visited the hotel every year for 30 years from the 1890's. Do I have to say they have their own ghost? (Bring garlic!)

Wednesday August 9th
Wednesday morning we cruise the most famous of all Norwegian fjords, the Geiranger Fjord before we drive the Troll-road, visits the famous mountain climbing eldorado Trollveggen (The Troll Wall) and returns to Trondheim in time for the opening of the conference in the evening.

There is a limited number of hotel rooms so we would be happy to know who will join us on this trip as soon as possible. The price is not fixed yet, but it will be app. US$ 300 for the whole trip per person in double rooms, food but not drinks included.
