The National Film Board produced a film called Pen Point Percussion in
1951 (NFB #106B 0151 035) that has Norman McLaren describing how he
makes synthetic sound by drawing directly on the film. Its very
good.

As to doing the images, a local grade 3 (ages 7-8) teacher of my
acquaintance does a film production unit with her class each year that
produces a film using this method. She has her class draw a film using
16mm clear leader and coloured markers. Each student gets one metre of
leader to work on and a 30cm strip of paper marked with a guide to show
where the frame lines are. They produce some interesting work. Its
quite easy but very time consuming.

I'll check my library at home and see if Norman wrote anything on the
process.
