Not exactly what you want but _Inventing Vietnam: The War in Film and
Television_ is a pretty good study on the Vietnam war and film and TV.
Also, there have been a couple of excellent essays on _Full Metal Jacket_:

Moore, Janet C. "For Fighting and for Fun: Kubrick's Complicitous Critique
in _Full Metal Jacket_." _The Velvet Light Trap 31 (1993):30-47.

Willoquet-Maricondi, Paula. "Full-Metal Jacketing, or Masculinity in the
Making." _Cinema Journal_ 33 (1994): 5-21.

The Willoquet-Maricondi one in particular extensively deals with the
American soldier.

Best,
Reagan
