For me, one of Ernest Borgnine's greatest/touching/different performances
was as the New York police detective fighting the Black Hand (Mafia) in
"Pay or Die! (1960)" - Allied Artists. He had a sincereity and
grittinesss which belied his subsequent navy buffoonery.
