The Department of Visual and Performing Arts in the College of Arts and Sciences at Clayton State University seeks applicants for department chair. The position begins July 1, 2017.

Clayton State University (CSU), a Senior Unit of the University System of Georgia, is fully accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. Situated in the southern crescent of the Metropolitan Atlanta area, CSU is classified as a predominantly black institution and is home to a diverse student and faculty body. The Department of Visual and Performing Arts (VPA) seeks leadership that values and strives to promote varied cultural traditions. VPA comprises the disciplines of Art, Communication and Media Studies, Dance, Film, Music, and Theatre. The department offers undergraduate degrees in Communication and Media Studies, Film Production, and Performing Arts. The largest degree major, Communication and Media Studies, offers a diversity of courses in areas including media studies, design and production, organization and corporate communication, advocacy and social justice. Film Production—the only BA in Film Production available in Georgia—is a leader in the education of film professionals in Georgia’s burgeoning film industry and a partner with the Georgia Film Academy. The BA in Performing Arts offers a flexible arts curriculum with emphases in Music, Music Education, or Theatre. The Division of Music is a fully-accredited member of NASM, and the music education program is approved by GaPSC and accredited by CAEP. The department offers additional minors in Art, Corporate Communication, and Dance. Renowned Spivey Hall, located on CSU’s campus, partners with VPA in performance and educational projects. The Chair reports to the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. Salary will be commensurate with experience.

Qualifications

• A terminal degree in one of the disciplines in the department
• A proven record of scholarship/creative activity, teaching, and service activities, and achievement of the rank Associate Professor or Professor
• Academic administrative experience (e.g. supervisor, budget management)
• Effective oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills

Responsibilities Summary

The department chair will be a collaborative leader who supports a culturally diverse faculty and student body and advocates effectively for all programs in the department. The chair performs a variety of duties, including:
• Administrative leadership in departmental budget management; curriculum development and review; enrollment management; recruitment, evaluation, and mentoring of faculty and staff
• Coordination of the department’s participation in college and institutional initiatives
• Teach a 25% load (equivalent to 9 credit hours per year)
• Other duties as assigned
