At Suthern Methodist University we no longer charge a lab fee for any of
our courses. We used to charge a lab fee for the production courses when we
were still furnishing film stock and processing but we now have the
students pay directly for stock and processing on their own. We also used
to charge a lab fee (or "screening fee") to help offset film rental
expenses but again we no longer do that. We now have a pretty good
collection of film and video available either through our media center or
through our film archives. What rentals we still pay are covered through a
budget line in the department budget.
